Buddhist Medicine Mantra
Direct observation of the thinking process.
*The mind as a formless entity.
One must have a practical approach in the quest towards self realization. We obviously must use the mind in order to search for an understanding of the mind. I say “search” because although you can search for the mind and its contents, all you will find is space. In truth the mind is nowhere to be found and non-material. Although thoughts appear in the mind, they cannot be seen with the physical eyes, thoughts cannot be touched, and you will never find a fleeting thought under a microscope. Under extremely powerful microscopes, all that can be found is vast areas of space, with particles drifting around. So by adopting a practical method in the observation of the mind and its workings, you can easily see that: (A) Consciousness is a formless entity. And (B) Consciousness is obviously operating on all levels, from atoms to particles, cells to organisms, planets to solar systems, solar systems to galaxies, and from galaxies to the universe. Consciousness is not just operating in the living organism, it is also operating equally in the lifeless and inert. Even the decomposition process is guided by consciousness.
*Space and Ether as the self.
So, it is obvious that consciousness and the mind are spacious and etheric by nature. The bulk of the spiritual quest is simply changing the identity. By asking yourself certain questions, and formulating practical answers, you will naturally begin to transform from matter into energy. Whatever notion is held in the mind, that is what one will experience. In any given moment, you are what you are thinking about. All fear and confusion are simply extensions of the limited identity. By constantly reminding ourselves of our true spaciousness, the identity born of mis-understanding, will gradually fade away. You will begin to dissolve the idea that you are a name, a body, a memory, and a mind. Then, after continuously experiencing the true nature of awareness (space), you will naturally re-identify with that clear and spacious awareness. This is the yoga of clear light.
*Emanation/Expansion and Contraction/Implosion.
Once the boundless mind is realized, it is then that you will understand how consciousness can expand to encompass the entirety of creation, or shrink and hang out in an atom. Initially, performing these actions with your awareness and will-power, will be spasmatic and unsteady. At best, you may receive a few cosmic impressions. With patience, and the cultivation of transparent -awareness, you will be able to experience the omnipotence of the Jewel within the lotus of the heart.
*Omnipotence as ordinariness.
Alas Alas, life keeps going, at least for now… Even when the Jewel is self-liberated, only a subtle change takes place. The pressure of the illusory identity is released. The ego becomes innocent and passive, while the Jewel stands in its own glory. With the ego pacified, the mind becomes clear and empty like a void, and the spontaneous awareness of the Jewel then manifests… Omniscience is the Jewels’ ordinary awareness, so one is calm in this state.
*Brahman as the only substance/element.
What is a dream made out of, what is the substance of the trees and the other people in your dreams. What is the intelligence that animates these dream objects. The substance is all one substance, and that one substance has been called many things, God, Brahman, Siva, Maya, Samsara, Atman, Consciousness, etc… Just as a dream is made out of one substance, the world we experience in the waking state is also made out of the exact same substance. When you fall asleep, the world disappears and the Jewel projects new worlds. When you wake up the dream disappears and the Jewel projects the continued experience. Upon death, the Jewel withdraws from the continued experience, and enters into the subtle realm of consciousness… From there, a wide variety of potentials may manifest. The hell realms are simply confusion, resistance, negative feelings, guilt, shame, fear, hate, doubt, denial of divinity, attachment, and the inability to find the divine in oneself and others, etc… The heaven realms are simply good feelings in regards to oneself and others, love, peace, joy, happiness, faith in something magnificent, humility, devotion, contentment, happy memories, non-attachment to forms, seeing the divine in oneself and others, etc… Due to the omniscient nature of the Jewel, the experiences of the bardo will be quite real, and can be quite intense. This is why the incarnation into human form is so valued. The earth realm is slow and quite manageable in comparison to the shifty subtle plane, and one can accomplish much in order to make the cosmic process clear and pleasant.
*Dreams as proof of maya.
By using the practical method of observation, mundane experiences become magical experiences, and the obvious becomes mysterious. To a child the world is full of magic and excitement. As the pressures of society and family grow, the magic becomes mundane, and the mystery is replaced by material and financial priority. All of this is fleeting, and there is an inevitable death transition that will have to be faced. Dreams come and go one after the next. In one dream you’re running away, in the next dream you’re helping someone. All this is maya, and you are the creator of your maya. All this spiritual effort is just so you can learn how to wield your maya. If a person puts forth the self effort, favorable conditions will manifest.
*Mantra and Death.
Whoever said you cannot take anything with you when you die was wrong. You can take a mantra with you. Some sages might even recommend it. A mantra is a sacred formula. One mantra is plenty. In the “bardo”, the mantra is your companion… In danger, the mantra is protection. In darkness, the mantra is a lantern. In the presence of a deity, the mantra is an offering. To thirsty souls, the mantra is water. To the lost, the mantra is home. The actual sound of the mantra is not as important as the intention of the mantra and your relationship with the mantra. The mantra is a dear friend, and an eternal ally.
*Psychology and symbolism of mantra and language.
Language is simply the using of sounds to communicate. Using Sounds to Communicate… Sounds a lot like Music… A mantra is like a church or temple within the imagination. It is a thought form which one designates as having a divine origin and purpose. The Mantra is a thought form that is connected to something sacred. Sound is Emanation, just like the rays of the sun. One can intend silently, and one can intend with sounds (language). Either way, the intention is the source of action. Sound and Mantra are intended action. What the intention is depends upon the motivating factors. Is one intending to please others? Is one intending to connect with the divine? These very intentions will color the vibrations emanated.
- Dissecting the ego/identity with the aims of realizing the full potential of being.
*The memory as the foundation of the Identity.
If you lose your memory, you would not know who you are. This is the identity’s greatest fear. The identity clings to the thoughts and memories it identifies with. It is completely dependent on these thoughts and memories. Once the identity becomes firmly established during childhood and adolescence, the Jewel of pure awareness is lost. Only by removing the identity and memory will this pure awareness be experienced. This is the same thing as enlightenment…Plain and simple… Enlightenment is the natural state of the soul when it is not identifying with a limited form, thus experiencing an unlimited awareness. Non-enlightenment is when the soul identifies with a limited form, thus experiencing a limited awareness. The majority of the spiritual quest toward self realization, is simply the painful process of the identity trying to remove itself. This is like a mind becoming two minds within the same body. The higher mind (intuition) is exhausted from running around in circles chasing after happiness, and the lower mind(intellect) wants to keep running around in circles chasing happiness. The stronger of the two will win dominion over the form. If you want to ignore something, you move into a state of ignore-ance. IGNORANCE is BLISS!!! Just learn how to ignore the ramblings of the mind, and rest in that natural space called the self.
*All thoughts and conditioning are held in the memory and carried into the present.
Who you are in any given moment, is simply all the thoughts and memories from the past that you carry into the now. Being fully present is simply being in the now without all of the thoughts and memories from the past. One should not entirely abandon the memory, as it is quite useful for communication and interaction. Just abandon the memory when you want to rest in a peaceful state. Being committed to a mental institute would not do a lot of good for the world…
*All conceptual thought and language spring forth from the imagination.
Animals make sounds to communicate, humans make sounds to communicate. Which sounds are closer to god? Whatever your imagination tells you!!! It is the sincere humble prayer that gets close to the source, not any particular sound or language. The language created by humans came from the imagination. And we all know how much humans like to imagine. So either all sounds are holy, or none are holy. To say some sounds are holy is to be prejudice against other sounds. It all SOUNDS pretty foolish!
*Knowledge as maya.
The field of knowledge is vast. In fact it is infinite. Some think freedom is when you have all the knowledge. Well, you might just wind up buried under a huge pile of knowledge. FUN! Freedom is leaving the pile. You can dive into the pile any time you like, just know how to get out of the pile…
- Utilizing the available philosophies and schools of thought from previous perspectives.
One would benefit from analyzing the previous generations’ thoughts, ideas, philosophies and practices. And pay special attention to the stuff written about enlightenment. This would include scripture and science. In order to see what’s inside the lotus, the lotus must open. After a thorough understanding of mind and enlightenment, one becomes comfortable identifying with space and void-ness. This is when the mind becomes utterly convinced that the mind is an invisible and non-material entity. When this person looks for the mind with their mind, they find nothing but space. Why has enlightenment become so complicated? Everything is the mere play of words, and we live on a water-sphere, orbiting a giant flaming ball. Hmmmm…
*Embracing the universal aspects of all religions.
With a deeper level of understanding of the mind and its contents, one sees the universal aspects of the mind, and a natural feeling of connectedness with all life takes place. One begins to understand that we all share the air that we breath, and we all share consciousness. All beings feel, and all minds think. Happiness is universal, and fear is universal. We all share the same feelings.
*Embracing first and foremost the Virtuous Qualities displayed by previous saints.
Who or what God is, is not as important as how does God behave. The form of God is irrelevant compared to the qualities of God. The universal themes of Godliness are, goodness, gentleness, grace,
*Universal Consciousness Manifest.
The identity is much like clay, in that it can be shaped and molded. In the beginning of the self liberation process, the “I” must choose an appropriate environment. This is of the upmost importance. Just as the plants that receive the balanced amount of sun and water will grow faster, consciousness can explore itself best in a private and serene environment, without distraction. Much meditation and contemplation must unravel before the veils are peeled away. These veils are opinions, knowledge, vocabulary, conceptualism, ego/identity, memory, and fantasy. Physical techniques may be helpful, as a flexible healthy body is fit for prolonged periods of meditation.
Did I really write all that? Dang that was like 3 years ago!
