"Just visited your site, read you story and heard your music...beautiful! Thanks for sharing it with us...you are on the right path and it seems like you have been guided very lovingly so far. Keep sharing! All love and blessings to you." -DEVA PREMAL- After four years of living in the forests of Hawaii in solitude, Eddy was inspired to share kirtan. He says, "I moved to Seattle in 2000, and I began devoting myself entirely to the guitar. I began dreaming about life on the beach in Hawaii. So I sold everything I owned, put my life into a backpack, grabbed my acoustic guitar and bought a one way ticket to Kauai, Hawaii. The moment I set foot on Hawaii, my anxiety literally disappeared, forever. It wasn't long before I had created a psychedelic rock band called Vintage. The band found immediate success, and I was offered an all expenses paid trip to New Orleans, to record and begin touring. It all happened so quickly, and I wasn't ready to leave Hawaii, so I stayed. I then became disinterested in the rock and roll format. I also became disinterested in songwiting, because the english language seemed so intellectual, and it seemed everything that could be said, has already been said. It was a strong feeling inside that was telling me, "go out into nature, look into yourself, and find your essence". So I sent back my ticket to New Orleans, gave back the Jeep Cherokee I had been given, and moved out into the woods. I began walking barefoot, I started gardening, and I let go of purpose. I met a 70 year old hermit. He is a disciple of the world famous Lama Yeshe. He told me about Shaktipat and began giving me scriptures, along with material written by the Dalai Lama. So I began sudying Yogic and Buddhist scriptures. When I say study, I mean that I carried around scriptures every day all day, used them as pillows and stayed up very late into the nights contemplating their meaning. This went on for about 4 years. Some of the scriptures I've studied are, Bhagavad Gita, The Ramayana, Ashtavakra Gita, The Ocean of Definitive Meaning, The Great Kagyu Masters, The Life of Milarepa, Mahamudra, The Life of Buddha, The Spandakarika, five versions of Patanjali's Sutras, The Life and Liberation of Padmasambhava, the Bible, The Hatha Yoga Pradipika, The Life of Yeshe Tsogyal, The Science of Breath, Light on Yoga, The Spiritual Heritage of India, a few versions of Vasishtha's Yoga, Advaita, and several others. Vasishtha's Yoga by Swami Venkatesananda is one of the only books I read now, just for fun. Naturally, I began doing japa mantra as my primary practice. So I learned first hand about the effectiveness of japa mantra(the repetition of sacred sound formulas). I became inspired to write melodies to mantras, and combine them with the guitar. I think that turning mantras into music will make the mantras appealing to people. So I began studying different guitar styles, and intuitively matched specific mantras with specific styles of guitar. I am not just a mantra musician, as I also love spanish guitar, flamenco, Brazilian jazz, and many other types of music. I have dedicated my life to music, and I am currently booking shows and workshops at yoga studios and yoga institutes." “Whether he’s chanting mantras or playing solo guitar, Eddy’s soulful energy and musical mastery are always shining forth.”
“Kirtan” is the ancient practice of call and response chanting. Each syllable and each vowel has a vibration, and when you string them together you get names/words. The chants are called “Mantras”. The mantras represent universal energies in the form of sounds. These universal energies already lie within us, so when we chant the mantras, we awaken these universal energies. When we stir these energies, they purify our mind and subtle body (the space between the atoms) and leave one feeling clear and refreshed. A person does not need to know about yoga or meditation or kirtan to receive the benefits of mantras.
There is the Jewel in the Lotus.
Well, Eddy is the Jewel in New York!
What a gift,
